the lemon orchard
Villa Scarlato is immersed in an ancient lemon orchard, ideal for an holiday in contact with nature and with the local traditions of the Amalfi Coast.
The Villa Scarlato farm was born in 2017 from the desire of our family to redevelop a semi-abandoned land on the Amalfi Coast. Despite the many difficulties that characterize this area, we have rolled up our sleeves and started this journey together.
Our choice was to work the product that best t represents the history and traditions of this splendid coast: the lemon, better known as Limone Costa D’Amalfi IGP.
Since day one, we focused on keeping our work respectful of the land and the final customer, and therefore decided to completely eliminate the use of chemical fertilizers and synthetic products in our lemon groves.
The Limone Costa D’Amalfi IGP is par excellence the fruit of this wonderful and unique place, the Amalfi Coast. Not only does it represent its history and traditions, but it also embodies quality and authentic flavor.
As early as the 11th century, the Amalfi Republic recommended the use of these lemons on their boats to fight the shortage of Vitamin C that characterized long voyages. At that time, lemons were already grown in the traditional technique which survived to this day: digging into the precious soil of the steep mountains surrounding the Golf to create terraces, and building wooden structures known as pergolas to support the trees’ growth.
In keeping of this beautiful tradition, we are proud to be able to offer a product of excellent quality that boasts the values and history of this wonderful land
Our lemons have an edible, medium thick skin, light yellow in color and rich in essential oils. The pulp is juicy and moderately acidic with few seeds.
The construction of the terracing in our lemon orchard dates back to 1949 and was carried out thanks to the expert hands of local farmers, with the traditional technique of dry stone walls, called "macere".
Through centuries of bold works of rural engineering, the local populations have managed to transform impervious cliffs into lush gardens all over the coast.
